Atletico expect Chelsea response …

Back-to-back 0-0 draws for Atletico Madrid have shown that they miss a striker with a killer instinct in front of goal, and they want to remedy that by luring Chelsea forward Diego Costa back to the club in January.

The Spain international is currently away from Chelsea’s squad, having not returned from his native Brazil for pre-season training in an attempt to force a move back to Los Rojiblancos.

However, the ball remains firmly in the London club’s court as Atletico have submitted an offer that has not yet been responded to.

The proposal that Diego Simeone’s side have offered is worth 60 million euros, with an initial fixed amount and certain variables that would likely be based on performance-related incentives.

Should Chelsea decide to accept Atletico’s offer, discussions will swiftly begin with Jorge Mendes, Costa’s agent, in attempt to ensure that the 28-year-old is ready to start immediately in January.

In the offices of the Wanda Metropolitano, confidence is growing that a deal will be completed shortly, allowing Atletico to plan around having Costa in the squad for their LaLiga push in the second half of the campaign, as well as in the latter stages of the Champions League.

While there is no deadline for Chelsea to respond, it is expected that the Blues will make a firm decision in the coming days which could see Costa reunite with Simeone.

The forward would go straight from Brazil to Madrid, without going to London, and would work under the orders of Atletico’s fitness guru Oscar ‘Profe’ Ortega as he looks to get match fit in time for the second half of the season.
